Enjoy lunch with other students and Emeriti* alumni, hear two guest speakers, and have a mentoring experience. Our Emeriti Alumni are full of great stories and advice from the earlier years of BYU-- from when Cosmo the mascot was a live cougar, and when students had to register for classes on index cards.

*BYU Emeriti alumni include alumni 40 years graduated, as well as retired BYU employees.

**Dress code is business casual (e.g. slacks, dress shirt). As sponsored guests, we encourage a professional demeanor. Lectures beforehand are optional; luncheon starts at 12:00 P.M.**

Speakers

Dr. D. Kelly Ogden

D. Kelly Ogden is a professor emeritus of ancient scripture at Brigham Young University. He taught courses in Hebrew, Old and New Testament, writings of Isaiah, the Bible as literature, history of the ancient Near East, biblical and modern geography of the Holy Land, Pearl of Great Price, Book of Mormon, and Doctrine and Covenants. For a span of fourteen years he helped administer BYU’s study programs in the Holy Land and guided students on field study trips all over Israel/Palestine, the Sinai, Egypt, Jordan, Turkey, and Greece. He led groups of students on many walks through the Holy Land, including retracing the “three-days’ journey” of Abraham and Isaac from Beersheba to Mount Moriah, the ninety-two miles Joseph and Mary traveled from Nazareth to Bethlehem, the two hundred miles from Dan to Beersheba, and the two-hundred mile “Lehi Trek” from Jerusalem to the Red Sea. He climbed the traditional Mount Sinai 18 times.

Brother Ogden earned a B.A. in English and Spanish, an M.Ed. in International Education, an M.A. in Hebrew language and historical geography of the Bible, and a Ph.D. in Middle East Studies. He has presented scholarly papers in Louisville, Kentucky; Washington, D. C.; Baltimore, Maryland; Atlanta, Georgia; Kansas City, Missouri; Honolulu, Hawaii; Seattle, Washington; Leuven, Belgium; Vienna, Austria; Santiago, Chile; and Oxford, England.

He is author of the following books:

His articles have appeared in the Ensign, the Liahona (International Magazine of the Church), the Church News, Encyclopedia of Mormonism, Meridian Magazine, and other LDS and non-LDS publications. He has been a frequent participant in the BYU Television scripture discussions.

For five years Brother Ogden helped prepare the LDS editions of the scriptures, and he served on the Gospel Doctrine Writing Committee for the Church. In the 1980s he served as president of the Jerusalem Branch in Israel. In the 1990s he served as a branch president at the Missionary Training Center in Provo, Utah, as 1st counselor in a BYU stake presidency, and as president of the Chile Santiago East Mission. He has served as president of the Guatemala Missionary Training Center and for the past seven years has been a sealer in the Provo Temple

Robert L. Millet

Robert L. Millet is Professor Emeritus of Ancient Scripture at Brigham Young University. After receiving both bachelors and masters degrees in Psychology from BYU, Brother Millet worked with LDS Social Services and Seminaries and Institutes of Religion. In 1983, following the receipt of his PhD in Religious Studies from Florida State University, he joined the BYU faculty. He has served as Chair of the department of Ancient Scripture, Dean of Religious Education, and Richard L. Evans Professor of Religious Understanding.

He is the author or editor of many books, articles, book chapters, and reviews dealing mostly with the doctrine and history of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and its relationship to other faiths. Some of his more recent books include Precept Upon Precept: Joseph Smith and Restored Doctrine (Deseret Book, 2016); Men of Covenant: Oaths, Covenants, and Transcendent Promises (Deseret Book, 2015); Mormonism: A Guide for the Perplexed (Bloomsbury, 2015), co-authored with Shon D. Hopkin; Talking Doctrine: Mormons and Evangelicals in Conversation (InterVarsity Press Academic, 2015), coedited with Professor Richard J. Mouw; Living in the Eleventh Hour (Deseret Book, 2014); Living in the Millennium (Deseret Book, 2014); Coming to Know Christ (Deseret Book, 2012); Modern Mormonism: Myths and Realities (Greg Kofford Books, 2010); and Holding Fast: Dealing with Doubt in the Latter Days (Deseret Book, 2008). He is also the coauthor of LDS Beliefs: A Doctrinal Reference (Deseret Book, 2011) with Camille Fronk Olson, Andrew C. Skinner, and Brent L. Top.

For the last twenty years Dr. Millet has been involved in building bridges of understanding and friendship with scholars and religious leaders from other faiths. At present, he is involved in formal and ongoing academic dialogues with Evangelical Christians, the Church of the Nazarene, and the Community of Christ (formerly Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Days Saints).

In the Church, Brother Millet has served as a high councilor, bishop of two wards, stake president, temple ordinance worker, and a member of the Church Materials Evaluation Committee. He and his wife Shauna have six children and twelve grandchildren and reside in Orem, Utah.
